The Problem with Plastic... |
||
A whopping 91% of plastic isn't recycled. Mass Production of plastics, which began just six decades ago has accelerated so quickly that it has created 8.3 billion metric tons - most of it in disposable products that end up as rubbish. Plastic takes more than 400 years to degrade, so most of it still exists in some form. only 12% has been incinerated. The prediction by scientists is that by mid-century, the oceans will contain more plastic waste than fish, ton for ton. this is because only 9% of plastic waste is recycled and is instead accumulating in unmanaged landfills or in the natural environment as litter which means at some point much of it ends up in our oceans. If present trends were to continue, by 2050, there would be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills. that amount is 35,000 times as heavy as the Empire State building* The Perfect scenario is a closed-loop solution whereby the plastic we use is recycled and no new plastic is produced. Recycled plastic (rPET) has one of the smallest carbon footprints of any major packaging types - smaller than glass and aluminium cans it takes less energy to produce and costs less to transport both economically and in the environmental impact. Making a recycled bottle takes only a quarter of the energy to produce compared to its new, non-recycled counterpart **, it's now up to us to make sustainable purchasing choices and commit to recycling all of the plastic we use for a caring and ethical no-waste economy.
